Those Who Fear What the Sky Cities Are Becoming

(Editor’s Note: “Knight of the Anti-Aether” is currently a working title within the Aether Skies setting and may evolve as the world develops further—but the core idea remains one of the most important philosophies in the setting.)

Most people in Aether Skies see aether as salvation.

It powers the engines that keep cities aloft.
It fuels industry, medicine, communication, and travel.
Without it, civilization would collapse beneath the clouds.

At least, that’s what everyone believes.

The Knights of the Anti-Aether believe something very different.

They believe aether is not humanity’s greatest achievement.

It is humanity’s slow corruption.

And every year the sky cities rely on it more deeply, the world moves one step closer to disaster.


Who Are the Knights of the Anti-Aether?

The Knights of the Anti-Aether are not a unified faction.

They are a loose and often fractured ideology spread across the sky cities.

Some are:

  • wandering hunters
  • militant orders
  • isolated monks
  • whistleblowers
  • saboteurs
  • scholars of forbidden history
  • survivors of aether catastrophes

Some are calm and philosophical.

Others are fanatics willing to cripple entire districts if they believe it will prevent something worse.

What unites them is a single terrifying belief:

Humanity was never meant to depend on aether this completely.


Why They Oppose Aether

To outsiders, the Knights seem irrational.

How can anyone oppose the very thing keeping civilization alive?

But the Knights do not deny that aether works.

That’s exactly what frightens them.

Because the deeper civilization sinks into dependence, the less anyone questions:

  • where aether truly comes from
  • why it behaves unpredictably
  • why storms worsen every year
  • why reality itself sometimes bends around it
  • and why ancient records describing “impossible phenomena” are becoming increasingly familiar

The Knights point toward:

  • resonance corruption
  • memory instability
  • dream contamination
  • living engines
  • cities changed by prolonged exposure
  • and strange anomalies following major aether events

To them, these are not isolated accidents.

They are warnings.


Stability Over Progress

Most cultures in Aether Skies worship innovation.

The Knights of the Anti-Aether worship restraint.

They believe:

  • not all knowledge should be pursued
  • some discoveries should remain buried
  • progress without understanding is dangerous
  • survival matters more than advancement

This philosophy places them in direct conflict with:

  • researchers
  • industrialists
  • smugglers
  • city officials
  • and nearly every major power structure in the skies

Yet even their enemies admit one uncomfortable truth:

Sometimes the Knights are right.


What the Knights Actually Do

Not every Knight operates the same way.

Different sects approach the danger of aether differently.


⚔️ Hunters of Corruption

Some Knights travel the cities searching for:

  • unstable artifacts
  • corrupted technology
  • dangerous experiments
  • resonance outbreaks
  • impossible phenomena

To these Knights, containment is mercy.

If something cannot be stabilized, it must be destroyed before it spreads.


📚 Keepers of Forbidden Knowledge

Some branches act more like archivists than warriors.

They gather:

  • ancient texts
  • pre-collapse myths
  • restricted research
  • fragmented historical records

Not to preserve them openly.

To seal them away.

Many Knights believe civilization repeatedly rediscovers knowledge that nearly destroyed the world once before.


🔥 Radical Purifiers

The most feared groups believe aether itself must be weakened.

They sabotage:

  • experimental facilities
  • unstable engines
  • forbidden research projects

To the cities, these groups are terrorists.

To their followers, they are preventing catastrophe before it begins.


🌫️ The Quiet Wanderers

Some Knights simply travel.

They appear:

  • before resonance collapses
  • near strange storms
  • after districts report shared dreams
  • around places where reality behaves incorrectly

No one knows how they sense danger so early.

Some whisper that prolonged exposure to anti-aether practices changes people in ways no one fully understands.


Public Perception Across the Sky Cities

Different cities view the Knights very differently.


🏛️ Orashul

Backward extremists threatening progress and economic stability.


🔥 Granglehold

Useful when hunting dangerous anomalies—until they interfere with production.


🕯️ Theopholis

Some religious groups see them as defenders against corruption.

Others consider them heretics for rejecting humanity’s “divine ascent.”


🥣 Kerfluffle

Respected when practical. Mocked when dramatic.


🌫️ Haven

People here listen to the Knights more carefully than most cities do.

Which deeply unsettles outsiders.


The Great Contradiction

The Knights oppose aether.

But they cannot fully escape it.

Their ships still float because of it.
Their cities still survive because of it.
Even their weapons and armor often rely on systems powered by the very force they distrust.

This contradiction defines the movement.

Some Knights seek moderation and restraint.

Others believe civilization has already gone too far.

A few believe the sky cities themselves are a mistake that should never have survived this long.


The Fear Beneath the Ideology

The Knights of the Anti-Aether are not truly afraid of technology.

They are afraid of dependency.

They fear:

  • a civilization that no longer understands its own foundations
  • people who mistake power for wisdom
  • systems growing more unstable while everyone pretends they are safe
  • and a future built atop forces no one fully controls

Most terrifying of all—

Some Knights believe the Barrier itself is weakening because humanity keeps pushing aether further than it was ever meant to go.


Using the Knights in Your Campaign

The Knights work best when they are morally complicated.

Avoid portraying them as simple villains or obvious heroes.

Instead, let players constantly wonder:

  • Are the Knights paranoid?
  • Or are they the only people paying attention?
  • How far should society go in pursuit of survival?
  • At what point does progress become recklessness?

The best Anti-Aether stories should never have easy answers.


Adventure Hooks


⚙️ The Sabotaged Engine

A Knight cell disables a city’s experimental core.

The city could collapse.

But evidence suggests the core was beginning to behave impossibly.


📚 The Forbidden Archive

The party uncovers sealed research the Knights desperately want destroyed.

Reading it may answer terrible questions.


🌫️ The Untouched District

One district abandoned advanced aether systems decades ago.

It is now the only place unaffected by a strange resonance event.


👁️ The Warning

A wandering Knight warns the party to leave a city immediately.

They refuse to explain why.


🔥 The Great Silence

A radical Anti-Aether sect believes shutting down all major aether engines simultaneously could stabilize reality itself.

Millions would die in the process.

They are preparing to act.


Final Thought: What If They’re Right?

Most people in Aether Skies fear what waits beyond the Barrier.

The Knights of the Anti-Aether fear something else entirely.

They fear humanity’s refusal to stop.

Its endless hunger for more power.
More energy.
More understanding.
More control.

Because history has taught them one terrible lesson:

Civilizations rarely collapse because they lacked ambition.

They collapse because they never realized when ambition became obsession.
